Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Dutch Creation That Forged our Contemporary Globe

One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.

According to a recent publication, however, that honor should go to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Before automated sawing, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”

Thanks to this rapid automated cutter, that turned logs to boards with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial as well as artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.

The First Genuine Industrial Device

The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part converted the circular motion into up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.

“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate these parts so the machine operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward stroke and advancing on every upward motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental parts.”

A fact that brings us up to today’s puzzle. I’d like you to reimagine a key the basic ideas underpinning this historic invention.

Design a mechanism which converts rotary movement to up-and-down action. Your available these components only: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two bars. A “guide”, that is a cylinder or housing through which one of the rods can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a base, so the parts do not fall down.)
