Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
